Media Violence is the kind of an extreme form of aggression that is produced due to constant exposure to aggressive and violent behavior in mass media, resulting in human suffering, lost lives, and economic hardship to our society as well as an atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and mistrust.(Media violence. (n.d.). For a long time now, the media has been a big part of our lives. Nearly everyone on the planet is or has associated with it somehow. It is a path for families and companions to have fun together, for fascinating subjects that individuals are occupied with, or to simply appreciate alone. Nonetheless, there is an issue that can be seen over a wide range of media: brutality. Savagery can be viewed as a distressed method to get over issues. There is judgment issues required for savagery. It is finished by menaces in school, grown-ups at a bar, groups in the city, however there is no more prominent impact on kids, relating to brutality, than the media. It is exceptionally dangerous and could hurt the adolescent rationally. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "What Is Media Violence" essay for you Create order Kids are presented to enormous measures of delineations of viciousness in numerous types of media, and have progressed toward becoming desensitized and more forceful; along these lines an exertion ought to be made to show youngsters sympathy. When children are taught how to tie their shoes, it is because of how their parents showed them. When children are taught how to do math problems, it is because of how their teachers showed them. So with all of these role models, why is there so much violence? It is because children learn from what they see, even if its on the big screen. Violence in the movies should have strict regulation because it has negative effects on the behavior of children. The media is a piece of regular daily existence in American children. Youngsters are encompassed by innovation, stimulation, and other media that is brimming with savagery. Daily papers, magazines, radio, TV, and the web all contain viciousness. The present media affects youngsters. The media does have an impact on them, however does it truly impact them to carry on despite the fact that they know its off-base? Broad communications, and its parts, are incredible and can impact ones psyche, and in addition their conduct. Youngsters that emulate characters who utilize viciousness in the media and show forceful conduct, will in general give them motivation to trust that savagery can occur without outcome. Tragically we experience a daily reality such that we are continually encompassed by gadgets, for example, tvs, tablets, wireless speakers and so on. From a doctors visit to the supermarket, we are always running into gadgets some way somehow. These kids are growing up supposing they should be progressive (most recent rendition) on their cell gadgets, tablets, music players, and book perusers. The measure of introduction of brutality is depicted profoundly all through every gadget. Young people average more than 7 hours a day using a variety of different media, with electronic media (i.e.,television,music,computers and gaming platforms, and movies) far outweighing everything else.Rideout, Foehr, Roberts,( 2010). Many harmful effects were categorized in several groups such (1) childrens learning of aggressive attitudes and behaviors; (2) desensitization, or an increased callousness towards victims of violence; (3) increased or exaggerated fear of being victimized by violence. Media violence increases physical, verbal, and relational aggression. Most children witness some form of media violence almost every day, whether on the news, in a cartoon, on the internet, in a TV show or in a movie. These exposures, whether short-term or long-term, can result in negative psychological effects, including increased aggressive behaviour and a diminished level of excitement towards violent acts. About 90% of households in the United States have one or more television in their household. Children spend 7-8 hours at a school facility to come home and spend hours on some kind of electronic device. So how many hours of physical or family time do they actually really spend ? Parents described Tv as playing a dominant role in their familys lives, and highlighted several barriers to reducing childrens TV viewing. Limiting access to TV, making TV viewing a reward and finding alternative activities were current strategies parents employed to limit TV viewing.Dorey, E Roberts, V., Maddison, R., Meagher-Lundberg, P.,Dixon,R., Mhurchu, C.N. (2010). It has been said that children are like sponges when it comes to attaining knowledge. This seems to be true whether they are learning to speak or how to show emotion. Feelings and emotions become more imminent once children begin to go through adolescents. Children acquire the ability to aggression, sadness, and happiness more readily. Males typically exhibit higher levels of aggression than females according to some research. Within the realm of learning children imitate what they see constantly, whether it be through TV, magazines ,movies, or radio. Media plays a strong role on how children act to different situations that they may have seen. Not all observers of violence are affected equally by what they observe at all times. Research has shown that effects of media violence on children are moderated by situational characteristics of the presentation including how well it attracts and sustained attention, personal characteristics of the viewer including their aggressive predispositions, and characteristic of the physical and human context in which the children are exposed to violence. Huesmann, L.R. (2007). In another investigation directed by Liebert and Baron (1972) there was a solid relationship with vicious conduct in the wake of survey brutal material. A gathering of children ages from 5 to 9 was picked and were exposed to the analysis each one in turn. They were first warmed by watch watching 2 minutes of TV that was unbiased to vicious and peaceful. After the two minutes were up the youngsters were arbitrarily relegated to a peaceful gathering that went to watch an energizing games arrangement for three and half minutes. The other gathering was exposed to was three and half minutes of the motion picture Untouchables , which was evaluated R. After the kid was given the open door encourage another kid or hurt them. They had could assist the other kid with the diversion they were playing or harmed by making the handle that the kid was holding hot. After the analysis was over the outcomes demonstrated their theory accurately. Kids that viewed the savage film were bound to make the handle hot for another youngster at that point was the other peaceful motion picture gathering. All through the previous thirty years, brutality in the media has expanded, thus has savagery in our general public among youngsters. The quickest developing portion of the criminal populace is our children(Bennett 30). There have been a few tests led in the course of recent decades figuring out what causes social savagery. On the off chance that a kid acted savagely towards another person, as on the off chance that he or she punched another kid, there would be ramifications for that youngster. Maybe detainment or establishing, yet then their demonstration of viciousness is for the most part overlooked. Once in a while do the guardians or school authorities explore why the kid acted brutally in any case. Whenever asked, the grown-ups may state something like the kid presumably watches a fierce TV program, similar to Power Rangers, or he/she plays brutal computer games, similar to Grand Theft Auto. Most individuals would think about that an adequate reason. It is the standard to fault the media for everything that isnt right with our way of life. This definition causes open our eyes to how frequently media viciousness truly shows up and how it is depicted. The manner in which it is depicted influences it to appear its alright and typical, and that skews how youngsters will consider viciousness when all is said in done. Media savagery isnt something that goes unnoticed by specialists; in any case, there are couple of indisputable examinations done regarding the matter. In all likelihood this is on the grounds that the impacts of media viciousness are hard to test. Guardians will lie about the amount TV or computer games their youngsters utilize, and kids could lie about that, as well. Additionally, any kind of correlational investigation, such as attempting demonstrate the connection between playing brutal computer games as a kid and after that growing up to end up a killer, is hard to do with regards to conduct, particularly practices that may not appear until 20-30 years further down the road. It is commonly acknowledged that media savagery exists, however the inquiries still exists: what amount of an impact does it have on society? Media viciousness is something that is amazingly predominant in the present famous media, particularly TV. As indicated by an article by KD Browne and C Hamilton-Giachristsis distributed in the scholastic diary Lancet, 20â€Å" 25 fierce acts are appeared in youngsters TV programs every hour, with a normal of three to five brutal acts amid prime-time TV. The vast majority wont concede that they like savagery in TV, motion pictures, and computer games, yet I feel that they offer an approach to see the viciousness without really harming anybody. On the off chance that we blue pencil or boycott it, we will be compelled to discover our brutality somewhere else. As far as I can recall, individuals have been contending over the substance of what we see. These three types of amusement have turned out to be gigantic over my age and the will turn out to be significantly greater with the ones to come. Numerous youngsters are investing the vast majority of their energy before a TV screen or before a computer game and who knows what number of demonstrations of homicides or savage wrongdoings a normal child saw even before the age of 12. My inquiry is the thing that does seeing these pictures really do to a child. Numerous individuals assume that seeing these pictures will make the kid more forceful and make them more brutal. In any case, that doesnt imply that the child will go out and murder somebody. A few people think so in light of the fact that they trust that what childs see on TV will need to make a child hurt another person. Frequently when a child carries out a brutal wrongdoing, the fault heads out to TV or motion pictures or computer games. I think this happens in light of the fact that they are a wellspring of brutality and numerous individuals trust that media savagery will cause genuine viciousness. They additionally accuse these wellsprings of media since it is by all accounts the most effortless thing to reprimand it on. Video games are also another form of entertainment that can promote violence. Many children spent most of their time in front of a TV playing video games. Video games have become a more recent trend. Many games consist of cursing, shooting, beating, and killing humans and monsters. The most games played are games that include killing and slaughtering other creatures and sports games that also have aggressive behavior. Video games have a stronger effect on children than watching television because the players take a direct and active task in the violence. The violence in these games can give them the idea that violence is an acceptable way to deal with problems. Fashion magazines are read by many teenagers. Magazines are full of images of bodies that are too perfect to be real, and teenagers see these pictures all the time. It can influence them to be like them and act like they do. Frequent readers of womens fashion magazines are more likely to have dieted or exercised to lose weight because of a magazine article. Television, music, video games, and other form of media are all things that are fun and sometimes educational for kids, but can be a bad influence on children, depending on the content. These all should be used to teach children how to solve problems and expand their mind, rather than teaching them to kill people and portraying someone negatively. For example, in first person shooting games, players are required to both act quickly and to keep track of multiple factors such as their location, the location and speed of the target. Furthermore, players can move and shoot simultaneously, which increases the difficulty of the task. Our brains receive these inputs from the environment, process all of this information while simultaneously coordinating with our hands and fingertips. This is not an easy task. Indeed, research documents that video-game playing is associated with higher visuospatial abilities (Ferguson, 2007) and better hand-eye coordination (Griffith, Voloschin, Gibb, Bailey, 1983). This has important real life implications. For example, a study of surgical residents and physicians by Rosser and colleagues (2007) Families with many communication devices were less likely than other groups to eat dinner together daily and to feel satisfied that they spent enough time as a family. However, researchers said the heaviest technology users were also those with the heaviest work schedules, which is likely to contribute to these negative reports. Savagery in computer games prompt fierce flare-ups and terrible conduct, in actuality, numerous individuals accept so. Are these vicious computer games trim and fuelling the present age of youthful personalities to a more brutal side, overlooking that these diversions are exclusively for simulation purposes. Numerous investigations have occurred encompassing this thought, giving substantial focuses to the two sides of the point. Video games are to a great degree well known everywhere throughout the world, interfacing individuals through the web enabling them to associate with each other through a digital entryway for amusement, with shifting classes of diversions from card recreations, first individual shooters, dashing or even 3D technique recreations. These diversions associate a great many individuals all around the globe, gamers spending incalculable hours stuck to screens taking a gander at a bundle of pixels. These recreations are advancing each year, as innovation shows signs of improvement so do the amusements, with more practical illustrations, sound impacts and situations. So with this, the savage diversions are likewise getting to be unquestionably more practical, vicious and forceful. Are these drawn out hours spent playing these diversions harming these individuals psyches? A significant number of the fierce war diversions being discharged today have age limitations on them, R16 or R18 cautionin g individuals of the brutal substance the amusement has, anyway this does not stop underage individuals getting their hands on them. The impact of exposure to violent video games has not been as extensively as the impact of exposure to TV or movie violence; however, on the whole, the results reported for video games are very similar to those obtained in the investigations of tv and movie violence. (Anderson Bushman,2001; Anderson etail.,in press) Basic psychological theory, from the cognitive, educational, neuroscience, social, and personality domains, as well as decades, of empirical studies, show that every customer of media is likely affected in some way. It is indefensible to claim that there is no good evidence for any effects of violent media is likely but neither do we claim that violent media are the primary cause of violent and antisocial behavior. What is supported by the vast body of research is the following: Media Violence is an important causal risk factor for increased aggression and violence in both the short- and long term. Moreover, media violence is one of the few known risk factors that parents, caregivers, and society in general can reduce at very little cost. Overall,Children who spend hours each day playing video games may not be spending enough time on homework and other academic-related activities.Exposure to violence, aggression and other behaviors that are seen as negative in most parenting circles is a downside of allowing children to play electronic game.Excessive exposure to electronic games can contribute to limited physical activity. Video games that focus on killing opponents to earn points and rewards may lead to a difficult differentiation between reality and fantasy, and may produce a desensitized reaction to violence.Children are increasingly becoming less active. Lack of physical activity in childhood leads to increased risk of being overweight or obese in adulthood, as well as obesity-related health problems. While on the bright side Technology programs may enhance learning skills.Exposing children to electronic games is ultimately a personal choice of the parents. Choosing games that are age-appropriate and limiting screen time to an hour or two each day.Toy companies market electronic games for babies and toddlers as well as tweens and teens, touting that their system will aid the development of motor skills.Video games that are centered around reading, math and other academic subjects may help children learn analytical and critical thinking skills that are required for problem-solving.

Freedom, Liberty and the Novel free essay sample

An examination of Rise to Rebellion by Jeff Sharra and how it relates to the War of Independence. This paper briefly looks at several quotes from the book Rise to Rebellion by Jeff Sharra and discusses the ideals of freedom and liberty by looking at key areas of the war for American Independence 1776-1783. It examines what these important concepts meant to people like Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Through out the many fights for independence there has always been a view and ideology that sought a restriction upon one nation however, when a nation seeks its own independence and freedom from a despotic ruler or government the reasons are not always clear and precise; for example when the United States of America fought for its independence between the years 1776 and 1783 was not just a war of politics it was also a war of personal prejudices against taxation and the rights of the settlers. The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare Essay Example

The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare Paper Shakespeare reveals prejudice of a character with dark complexion with the very first line when the Prince of Morocco entered, Mislike me not for my complexion. We find a contrast amongst the two suitors with the colour of their skin. The Prince of Morocco was dark and the Prince of Arragon was fair. Morocco is both more elaborate and direct than Prince of Arragon and this is shown in the line How shall I know if I choose the right casket. This line shows us that Morocco was well concerned, interested and very curious to win Portia and for this he even asked several questions in order to clear his doubts before choosing the casket. We also see that Morocco prays to god in times of emergency (as he took an oath never to get married again) Some God direct my judgement. Shakespeare reveals the character of Morocco as a confident, self conscious and strong person who is very proud of his colour. The Prince of Morocco meets Portia and tells her that he is often considered very handsome on account of his black skin. He didnt want to be judged by his complexion because he was dark and explains that all the people from Morocco were like that. In those times however a dark person was considered to be the devils accomplice and he didnt want to be misjudged. The Prince of Arragon didnt defend himself in any way even though he was Spanish, as at that time England and Spain were constant enemies and even being an adversary he didnt mention anything. Prince of Moroccos boastful and flattery nature is seen in the lines, I would not change this hue except to steal your thoughts my gentle queen and the best regarded virgins of our clime have lovd it too. His achievements have been described through his boastfulness especially seen in the lines To try my fortune. By this scimitar that slew the Sophy and a Persian prince. He portrays to be a figure of great dignity, brave and noble even though he may be regarded as rather arrogant to when he uses the occasion in order to declaim his achievements at Portia. He thinks he is very intellectual and has very heroic qualities, which are flawless to marry Portia. He is also very vainglorious and proud and always trying to impress Portia by honorable and devoted marks like, Yea, mock the lion when he roars for prey To win thee, lady. The prince tries to act courageous and tries to influence Portia by his intentions. The Prince of Arragon didnt try to boast about himself but agreed to try his luck at the caskets without further ado. The Prince of Arragon, as his name suggests, is arrogant and proud like the Prince of Morocco. He considered himself to be superior to others as he said, How much low peasantry would then be gleand from the true seed of honour! He is revealed to be egocentric and narcissistic as he rejects the lead casket immediately saying, You shall look fairer, ere. I give or hazard. He felt that lead should look more attractive if anyone must take a risk for it. Both the Princes judged through outward appearances as Arragon said base lead and Morocco said dull lead Both of them made quick rejecting decision for lead. For Morocco lead was threatening and not worth risking anything for. He is attracted by appearances and was adamant not to choose the lead casket as he said, Must give! For what? For lead? Hazard for lead? A golden mind stoops not to shows of dross. This line tells us that he doesnt choose the lead casket and dismisses this subject quickly as he thinks lead has no value, it is a wastage of time and earning jeopardy if thinking or choosing for lead. By this phrase we also come to know that the prince can be imperious and patronizing when the lead topic is discussed. The Prince of Arragon rejects lead because of the ominous warning, who chooseth me shall must give and hazard all he hath. The Prince of Morocco took his time to choose the right casket so as to not making rash decisions as he said, I will survey th inscriptions back again. He also scrutinizes the inscriptions again and again. But when he came to woo her, he wanted to go to the caskets immediately as he was desperately waiting to win Portias hand. But unlike Morocco, Arragon was quick in making judgements. He went astray from the right path as from knowing that appearances are often deceptive he chose with a fond eye. Morocco did not approve of the word deserve in the inscription of the silver casket who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves. He said that he knew that he deserved Portia as he said, I do in birth deserve her, and in fortunes, in graces, and in qualities of breeding; but more than these, in love I do deserve. He didnt want himself to be strayd no further by the inscription of the silver casket as he didnt want to lose Portia. He therefore, spurns the silver, which he feels is too base a metal to hold such a beautiful woman as Portia. He thinks there is a very likely possibility in losing his lady if he chooses the silver casket. He considers himself to be a suitable match for Portia because he is wealthy, he has fine quality, he belongs to a noble family and he has a high position in society. He also tries to boast about his courage in the line to prove whose blood is redder, his or mine . Even after all this effort to win Portias admiration he is deceived by appearances when it comes to choosing the caskets. His choice shows that how he judges by outward appearance, not considering how the contents of the gold casket might not be indicative of its appearance. There is dramatic irony when he says, graved in gold because in the light of the consequences of Moroccos eventual wrong choice he finds that the casket is a grave for it contains a skull. Likely, the Prince of Arragon didnt approve of the word many in the golden casket. He felt the word many would mean the stupid majority of ordinary people who judge simply by appearances, accepting what their foolish eyes tell them instead of trying to see and understand what lies beneath and thinks that gold refers to the foolish populace. He continued saying that people base their judgement and consequent actions on mere surface impressions. The Prince of Arragon uses a very suitable simile to prove his point when he compares them to the martlet (swift) that builds its nest on the outward wall of the building where it may get damaged or destroyed instead of choosing a more sheltered place. Later we realise that this speech is an example of dramatic irony because he too will choose with a fond eye. The Prince of Arragon is a snob smugly self-satisfied in his dismissal of the barbarous multitudes. Both of the suitors were over-confident. According to the Prince of Arragon, there are many suitors who consider themselves honourable and deserving but they do not really deserve the stamp of merit. Arragon clearly believes and said that he was born with the necessary merit to win Portia, and in his view merit and honour only belong to a highly selected few people such as himself. Since he considered himself to be worthy of Portia, he chooses the silver casket and that too an order to a servant to perform the task of actually unlocking the casket, to humble a thing for Arragon to do himself. He was shown to be confident when he said, Bring me the fairest creature northward born. All that he boasted was to show that he is quite capable of achieving anything he desires. His over-confidence is apparent when he says, deliver me the key and chooses the silver casket very sure that Portias portrait was within. He thinks that he is more than worthy enough for Portia and this attitude of his, troops his downfall for it is not the silver casket that holds Portias picture. Shakespeare has given a lengthy speech on each suitor on the casket they were going to choose. The Princes speak in blank verse through their presence, which only changes after both of them reading their scroll. Their reaction after opening the casket is similar as the gold casket contains a carrion Death, within whose empty eye there is a written scroll and the silver casket contains the portrait of a blinking idiot, presenting him a schedule. After the suitor reads the scroll or the schedule, his language starts to be similar with the contents read on as it becomes into a poetic form. Arragon is uncharacteristically struck-dumb by what he finds, a blinking idiot. To late he realises that he really doesnt deserve anything better than a fools head. This is symbolic, for he is an old man and hence is an idiot for thinking himself deserving of a young woman. Whereas Moroccos shocking expression, Oh! Hell! is not a mere expression of extreme annoyance but Morocco knew that if he had to keep the oath, he had to remain unmarried for the rest of his whole life, he faces a kind of living hell, deprived of the woman of his choice and also because he is a man not use to failing. Both of the princes were courteous, affable gentlemen who respected Portia. The Prince of Morocco is brought out to be a sole loser, as his pride disappears when he leaves saying, I have too grievd a heart to take a tedious leave, thus losers part. When he finds his hopes are dead, he welcomes frost and tries to keep up a brave and dignified appearance and we can see a contrast in the manner of his departure to the fanfare of his arrival. The departure of Arragon is similar as he said, Still more fool I appear by the time I linger here. He had come to woo with one fools head but had to go away with two. After reading, I felt sympathy for both the suitors who had come to try their fortune and unfortunately lost. Amongst both the characters, I liked Morocco more because in the way of departure it felt to me that he had come with a true heart for Portias love. I have more sympathy with him as he cannot marry any other woman and will have a life of a living hell as in later life he cannot share his happiness and sorrows with anyone. All the hopes he had come with were destroyed as everyone in his homeland was desperately waiting for their queen as Portia.

If The State Becomes A Major Source Of Threat To Its Citizens, Does It Essay

If The State Becomes A Major Source Of Threat To Its Citizens, Does It Thereby Undermine The Prime Justification For Its Existence - Essay Example The constitution as put forward by Hobbes is a social contract between the people and the state that legitimizes the government in place. Once the contract is broken, it is only necessary to overthrow the existing government and install one that would serve citizen interests (Booth, 2007). Some questions that need answering are; what is security? For whom? What are the security issues? It is important to understand these questions to be able to evaluate whether the state which is supposed to protect security has become itself a source of insecurity to its citizens and whether it should lose its mandate to govern or lose its justification for its existence. In order to achieve this, the paper will be divided into three sections. The first section will discuss what security is. The second section will discuss whose security it should be for, is it the state or individual and implications on legitimacy of state. This will involve considering different views from realists, constructivist s, critical studies, feminism, peace research and the Copenhagen school of thought. It will argue that security is socially constructed thus means different things to different people. This in turn affects how people understand the role of the state to be and whether it is legitimate. The last section will be the conclusion. International security studies is a discipline that has evolved over the years dealing with security issues in a global arena. It depends on the definition put forward regarding security since various theorists have not been able to come up with a uniform definition. According to Buzan (1983) a legitimate state is one that meets the needs and wishes of its citizens including security, conflict resolution, economic development and peace. It is not uncommon to hear governments implying that they are doing certain things such as curtailing people’s freedom for state security reasons. Williams (2012:3) asserts that individuals are â€Å"killed, starved, tort ured, raped, impoverished, denied education and healthcare all in the name of security.† This is especially so in war torn countries such as Syria (Paul, 1990). So what is security and who determines what security issues are? According to Booth (1997: 104-119) security is a derivative concept and as such its understanding derives from political outlook and philosophical worldview. For example, for ethico-political view security could include everything and anything depending on policy agenda while for analysts, use of empirical evidence frames issues such as diseases as global security issues. Williams (2012:5) defines security as â€Å"alleviation of threats to cherished values.† It is therefore, based on emancipation though justice and human rights. Security can also be positive or negative; negative security implies absence of threat whereas positive security implies â€Å"making things possible† (p.6). For Buzan and Hansen (2009: 9) security is about â€Å"p olitical themes such as state, authority, legitimacy, politics and sovereignty.† The next question that needs understanding is whose security? Different theorists have different opinions regarding the referent object or for whom security is meant to be. For realists, the state is the referent object (Buzan & Hansen, 2009). Issues of security are thus aimed at addressing the internal and external threats to the state. It then implies that ensuring the

Developing self awareness reflection paper

Developing self awareness reflection paper Through attending the course of Knowing ourselves, knowing our world, I have increased self- awareness. Every week, I keep learning more and more about myself. Self awareness, according to Wong (2003), means recognition of our personality, strengths and weaknesses and likes and dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to recognize when we are stressed or under pressure. Self awareness also promotes effective communication and interpersonal relations, and also for developing empathy for others. After I have gone to the camp, I learn to face something I used to evade. I was raised up by my aunt when I was young. I always feel difficult to live in the love between my own parents and my aunt. These persecute me for long. All these years, I have never told the others about the above thoughts. I just want to escape from these things. However, I feel so pleased that I have finally let my thoughts released out when I told my classmates in the camp. I used to evade the problem of how to balance the relationships between my parents and my aunts and uncle. Learning to increase self- awareness, Rothman (1999) suggests that it brings increased openness to other ways of thinking and a greater insight into other kinds of life experience. I will not escape from tackling the relationships and I can know more about my deep self. This enables me to understand my clients when they have something used to evade. I can then guide my clients to release their feelings and increase openness. It does help me to be more aware of myself by knowing how my past experiences influence my personal values. Having an uncle who experience three marriages because of having other relationships outside of his marriage (with women from the mainland China), I personally dislike women who are come from mainland China, come to Hong Kong to marry a man and to grab our resources. I dislike like them as I think that they always intervene in their marriage. However, this hatred towards new immigrants makes me unable to make appropriate decision when a client who is a new immigrant seeks help from me. Furthermore, Biestek (1961) suggests that the relationship between the social worker and the client has been called the soul of casework. With such a bias, I may have personal value judgment and uncontrolled emotional attitudes toward the clients. As a result, it may be difficult for me to develop close relationship with the client. However, now I know and realize that my past family experiences are affecting my values and thoughts, Rothman (1999) suggested that it assists the worker to work with clients, and to control and minimize the influences of personal attitudes and beliefs that may be harmful and prejudicial toward clients. According to Rothman (1999), as an adult, one has his own viewpoint towards something. The most concerned part in self-awareness is about the unaware perceptions, especially those negative feelings towards the others, such as biases, prejudices or stereotypes. According to Rothman (1999), they are hidden inside and covered by acceptable excuses and rationale. Take several minorities for an example, general people usually have some negative personal feelings and comments towards the disabled, homosexuals, prostitutes, the street sleepers and so on. Unaware perceptions may be expressed in conversations, acts or behavior since they are hidden in the subconscious. Having these unaware perceptions, as a social worker, I may unconsciously say some words which hurt clients feelings and make them become defensive and do not trust in me. Thus making it hard to develop good relationship with the client and hard to have intervention processes. Besides, sharing my own feelings and opinions among peers can also help to make up my own viewpoint towards the population. I can know more about the peers attitudes and how the others react towards some issue by listening and sharing among a group of peers. By exchanging opinions in an overview, I can learn to think more comprehensively and to view an issue with different perspective. By gaining opinions and experiences from the others, I may then gradually change my former views towards an issue. When it comes to the social work profession, it is common to have values or attitude conflicts with certain aspects. Self-awareness promotes several essential traits, such as openness, acceptance, willingness, trust, knowledge, interest and courage towards the clients (Rothman, 1999). When social worker can have comprehensive thoughts and view towards an issue, it can enable social worker to have a better understanding on the perceptions of the clients. Even the opinions of clients is different from the social workers personal view, the social worker can give clients an appropriate advice without any bias and would be more comfortable and easy to deal with the circumstances with their attitudes, values and beliefs (Rothman, 1999).. Social workers role is to stands right on the clients situations to provide services for them according to their wishes and needs. Self-awareness enables social workers to assist clients in a suitable and appropriate way. According to Segal E.A, part of self awareness is understanding ones down personal problems and biases, and addressing them so that they do not interfere in work with others. As a social worker (in the future), self awareness enables me to know myself and be aware of their own values, assumptions, beliefs, strengths, and weakness, so that I am able to help the clients effectively. Rothman (1999) suggests that increased awareness brings increased openness to other ways of thinking and a greater insight into other kinds of life experience. So, keeping my mind open, as a social worker (in the future), I can then listen to clients sharing patiently, even when clients have other point of view different from mine, I can have an appropriate response and advice. Self awareness promotes effective communication and interpersonal relations, and so as developing empathy for others. These are all elements which enable social workers to provide skillful service and positive attitude to clients. Increasing self awareness do helps me with my professional development.

The Merchant of Venice :: Free Merchant of Venice Essays

"The Merchant of Venice" by WIlliam Shakespeare. "The Merchant of Venice" is a play about revenge, justice, deseption and friendship. The story is about, Shylock a wealth Jew, lending one of his enemies, Antonoi, three thousand ducats. Although Antonio is a rich merchant all his resources are in his ships, trading too distant countries, but because he wants to help out his friend, Bassanio, he has no choice but to ask Shylock for a loan , not to know it could lead to his death. In this play there is a big difference between the Christian charaters and Shylock, the main difference being Shylock seems to be more interested in his money and business rather than human relationships, which the Christian charaters seem to b e more interested in. However, in one part of the play Shylock seems to be hurt at the fact his daughter has sold a ring, which his deceases wife gave him, for a monkey. (Act 3 Scene 1 ) " It was my turquoise, I had it off Leah when i was a bachelor. I Would not have given it for a Wilderness of monkeys. " This shows a side to Shylock that we have never seen. It shows the love he had and still has for his deceased wife Leah. Shylock shows how hurt and betrayed he feels that his daughter has sold his ring by saying that he wouldn't had given it away for a " wilderness of monkeys ". Another theme in the play that Shylock brings out is predjudice. He judges people before he gives them a chance to show what they are really like. He has different veiws on different characters depanding on who they are. ( Act 1 Scene 3 ) "I hat him for he is a Christian" This shows how he feels against antonio , a Christian whom he has never met and it shows how prejudice he can be. In one part of the play Shylock shows a side to him we have never seen before. Instead if seeing him as the man who is greedy and

Also in this quote is Bradstreet’s observance of men in their natural state. She sees men as war hungry, vain and powerful. Consequently, Anne Bradstreet faced a double bind. If she voiced her thoughts, opinions, and beliefs, she would have put herself in danger, and by not saying anything, she would force herself to go on living in a patriarchy. Bradstreet apologized in her poetry for writing as a woman. This can be see in â€Å"The Prologue,† in the first stanza.
